Learning Goals and Curriculum:

Math Academy is an after-school program for advanced mathematical education.

Math Academy will take its students far beyond their school grade curriculum level. In addition to learning the material to meet our curriculum objectives - often 1 to 2 grades beyond the child's current grade level (depending on prior preparation) - the following goals are set for each child:

  • Expand mathematical thinking capacity and mathematical strategy skills
    • developing multi-step mathematical strategic thinking
    • this skill must be supplemented by and built upon a solid foundation of mental math skills, when mechanics of mathematical operations are mastered solidly and applied consistently (developing reliable and consistent mental math skills)
  • Ability to develop a variety of mathematical ideas (seeing opportunity for multiple approaches to solving a problem)
  • Ability to recognize and formulate non-standard solution strategies for challenging/non-standard problems
  • Be armed with multitude of models of mathematical thinking and a variety of solution approaches in order to accumulate and have a wealth of mathematical knowledge at your disposal
  • Ability to master mathematical concepts and solve problems with ease and sense of gratification, gaining self-confidence in mathematical learning process

Preparation for Math Olympiad-level competitions is part of the curriculum.

Testimonials

What her Principal says about our Lead Teacher:

"...Larisa's enthusiasm for math is palpable. She lives and breathes what she calls "the beauty of math." She has the consummate mathematical mind, and the effect is contagious, particularly on adolescents who are not easily able to appreciate its real-world application and relevance..."

What her Principal says about our Lead Teacher:

"…there have been so many instances of appreciation of her instructional talents [from students, parents and colleagues]…"

"Mrs. Bankovsky has high expectations for all of her students. She attempts to get all students involved in her lessons and encourages her students to persevere even when they are seemingly having difficulty…"

What her Supervisors say about our Lead Teacher:

"Mrs. Bankovsky has a passion for mathematics that is evident to her students and fellow staff members… She reads math books for pleasure."

What her Supervisors say about our Lead Teacher:

"Ms. Bankovsky shows her love of mathematics, and students are aware of her passion for the subject. She wants students to learn and also makes that evident in her instruction."

What her Supervisors say about our Lead Teacher:

"Mrs. Bankovsky does a great job at questioning. She is constantly asking questions - and effectively varies the type between all-class and directed questions. This also allows her to assess student understanding and keeps everyone focused and involved. Student answers to initial question are often followed-up by "why?", "please explain your thinking." This leads to higher order thinking and requires students to thoroughly explain their work and reasoning"

What her Supervisors say about our Lead Teacher:

"Larisa is excellent at emphasizing vocabulary. She stresses the importance of correct mathematical vocabulary usage when students explain their answers"

What her Supervisors say about our Lead Teacher:

"Mrs. Bankovsky is very receptive to new ideas and is not afraid to experiment in an attempt to enhance students' understanding"

What her Supervisors say about our Lead Teacher:

"Mrs. Bankovsky has a very positive and enthusiastic attitude. It is obvious that she loves the subject and that she enjoys teaching. This attitude has a tendency to rub off on the students and they become more motivated to excel."

Classes:

Classes are held in small groups of up to 5-6 students. Class duration for a small group lesson is 1 hr 15 min.

Semi-private lesson (2 students) allows for a more personalized, in-depth learning. Class duration for a semi-private lesson is 45 min.

In our classes we utilize modern equipment and software in order to present learning materials in most effective way.

A blend of quality textbook and workbook resources (both American and Russian) is utilized in generating our classwork and homework materials (including, but not limited to Singapore Math textbooks, L. Peterson Math textbooks, Collection of Math Olympiad and Challenging Problems, M.I. Skanavi Collection of Problems, etc.).
